According to a study originally published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, enuresis is a common condition among children in the United States. Defined as involuntary urination, (especially by children at night), enuresis was found at a rate of 4.45% in children, with a greater occurrence in boys than girls. Enuresis has been associated with issues such as: poor self-image, diminished achievement in school, and in this study, an association to Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
While bed-wetting is a common problem in children, they are too often not treated for it, despite the potential for negative effects on emotional health. If your child is having issues with involuntary urination, in the day or at night, talk to your pediatrician. Often times, physical therapy, such as is done at Pelvic Wellness Center, can greatly help.
