What should I expect on my first visit?

During your first visit, your PT will be conducting a thorough evaluation of your condition, including a detailed history of your situation.  Usually, your evaluation will take place over the first two visits.  Your physical therapist will conduct a postural and musculoskeletal assessment, looking at how your joints, muscles, nerves, and other soft tissues move. Included in this evaluation your physical therapist may perform a pelvic floor muscle assessment in order to most effectively identify strength deficits and other dysfunction which may be contributing to, or resulting from, your condition.

What should I expect during subsequent treatment sessions?

Following your initial evaluation, your physical therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs based on the evaluation findings. This treatment plan will be implemented during your subsequent sessions.

The typical duration of treatment ranges from 6 to 8 weeks, although this may vary depending on your individual condition. Throughout your treatment, various physical therapy interventions may be utilized, including specialized manual techniques targeting the pelvic floor, pelvic girdle, and low back. These techniques may include myofascial release (MFR), connective tissue mobilization, visceral mobilization, trigger point release, strain/counterstrain, muscle energy techniques, and joint mobilization. In addition, strengthening exercises focusing on the pelvic muscles, hips, abdominals, and lower back may be incorporated into your plan.

Your physical therapist will also provide education regarding the underlying causes of your pain or dysfunction, as well as equip you with at-home strategies to help manage your symptoms. These may include exercises for strengthening, stretching, and behavior modifications. In some cases, you may be asked to track your symptoms and activities, such as maintaining a bladder diary if bladder-related issues are part of your condition.

To further assist with muscle retraining, particularly for incontinence or pelvic pain management, your physical therapist may recommend the use of real time ultrasound or other assistive devices that improve sensory awareness, coordination, strength and relaxation.
